What makes a chinchilla cage different to a hamster cage?

The biggest difference is size. Chinchillas need bigger, taller cages because they lover to jump. Their powerful back legs give a chinchilla a quite amazing power which can only really be appreciated when you see them leaping around from platform to platform. To accommodate this, you need to give your chinchilla a large cage in which to play (probably three times as tall as a hamster cage).

The other factor that you need to take acount of in a chinchilla cage is indestructibility, because chinchillas love to chew. Because their front teeth are continuously growing they need to gnaw on hard surfaces to grind the teeth down, and if their cage is made of plastic, or has wood elements, then expect them to chew on those.

For that reason most chinchilla cages are made of metal wire mesh with some wooden shelves internally.

Hamsters are clean animals. They like a nice clean cage and like most domesticated pets, hamsters will generally clean themselves. Read our guide for tips on how to clean a hamster cage, to help keep your hamster clean.

Because of this, it should never be necessary to have to bathe your hamster as washing them is not good for their fur; the water removes the natural oils from the fur, which in turn can make them unwell.

To help keep the hamster’s fur in god condition he will lick it as required, however there may be times when you feel you have to wash your hamster. This should only be an exceptional circumstances, for example if there is something on the fur that may be toxic of harmful to your hamster if ingested.

If there is a substance that has to be removed from the fur you should see if it is possible to cut it out, or brush it away. If this is not possible or the substance is something like paint or something very sticky and you feel forced to wet your hamster then do so very carefully. Use a damp cloth and a small amount of warm water, and keep away from the nose, mouth ears and eyes.

When clean, dry your hamster very carefully with a towel and then with a hair drier on a very low setting held far away from the hamster. Make sure your hamster is completely dry before returning it to its cage so that the bedding does not stick to the fur.

One thing to consider is that if there is a bad smell coming from your hamster it may be because it is sick and in this case you should take your pet to the vet to be checked over.

The pink hamster wheel shown above would make a nice addition to an existing cage and is compatible with Rotastak cages, providing an external wheel for your hamster to play in.
Also available for the Rotastak range is this pink travel cage, which could be used to expand another Rotastak system with a touch of pink.

Finally there is the wonderful Pink Hamster car, sold as the critter cruiser. What more could a hamster want!

Do you love pink; why not have a pink hamster cage?

Pink is all the rage, with everything from the latest gadgets to clothing accessorie designed in this wonderful colour. So why not have a pink hamster cage?

If pink is what tickles your fancy, or you want to accessorise a bedroom with a pink hamster cage then you will be pleased to know that there are a number of choices available to you.

The top of the range in pinkness is the Rotastak Pink Palace (shown above). This is a complete living space for your hamster and comes with tunnels, tubes, accessories and expansion units to keep your hammy happy in their pink hamster cage. This home is about 53cm (21 inch) high, 48cm (19 inch) wide and 58cm (23 inch) deep when put together.

Magic Maze

Next up, and just as pink is the Magic Maze, also from Rotastak. This hamster cage has a wire mesh section to give improved ventilation, as well as curvy tubes, a mezzanine level (although not suitable for dwarf hamsters), wheel and water bottle. When put together the Magic Maze is slightly wider but otherwise just a bit smaller overall than the Pink Palace and measures approximately 38 cm (15 inch) high x 61cm (24 inch) wide x 53cm (21 inch) deep.

Rotastak Dreamland Pink Hamster Cage

Another pink hamster cage from Rotastak, is the Dreamland, another pink hamster cage with a ‘fantasy theme’ which includes the familiar curvy tubes an easy access lid, a wheel and water bottle.

There is also a pink carry case element included, which connects buy tunnel to form part of the cage, or can be used to transport your hamster (to the vet for example). This cage is approximately 36 cm (14 inches) high, 38 cm (15 inches) wide and 41 cm (16 inches) deep.

Rotastak Starter Pink Hamster Cage

Very similar to the Dreamland is the Rotastak Pink Starter Home, providing a main living area and the carry case with interlinking tubes and tunnels. There is a high level lookout post, an internal wheel and a water bottle and is slightly larger at approximately 41cm (16 inches) high, 41cm (16 inches) wide and 26 cm (10 inches) deep. The starter cage comes with stickers to decorate the outside of the cage.

All the Rotastak cages are compatible with other Rotastak accessories for expansion if required at a later date.

It is important that the hamster food you give your hamster is varied and fresh (that is to say do not give stale hamster food and replace old food in the cage regularly).

Basic hamster food should include the dried hamster food you get from pet shops and your hammy will probably eat about a desert spoonful a day, but leave enough in his food bowl so he does not go hungry. You may find your hamster will not eat everything in the hamster food mix, or that they prefer one make over another; they are just choosy like that!

Your hamster will probably also like seeds, particularly sunflower seeds, peanuts, dried fruit and vegetables (apple and carrot seem to be popular), but you will need to try different things to see which go down well, and which are rejected.

You can supplement the dried hamster food with fresh vegetables; carrots, cucumber, courgette, but not potato. You can get special carrot holders that hang on the bars of the cage and will hold a carrot for the hamster to eat, or alternatively cut up pieces and place in the food bowl. Hamsters also do not usually like citrus fruit (lemons etc) and tomatoes. Fresh dandelion leaves are usually also very popular with hamsters, but make sure they have not been treated with weed killer.

In addition, make sure there is always a supply of fresh water in the cage to supplement the hamster food.

To keep your hamster healthy and fit it is important that you clean your hamster cage regularly, which will usually mean about once a week.

Whilst some cages have a special area for your pet whilst you are cleaning the hamster cage, if your’s does not, you can put your hamster into a small box whilst you take the cage apart to clean it. Alternatively if you have a hamster exercise wheel, you could let your hamster run around in this for the short time you should need to clean out the cage. Once you have removed your hamster, you might want to wear rubber gloves for the cleaning part.

Change the wet bedding (this can be easier if you provide a hamster toilet, which can limit the area that gets wet and soiled), and remove any rotten food that your hamster has stored away in its nest. When you need to replace the nest material, try and leave a little of the existing material as it will retain the scent your hamster is comfortable with.

Whilst you have the bedding out of the cage give the plastic parts and the wire mesh a good clean with hot soapy water (use dishwasher detergent) and give them a good rinse before drying. You can then spray a suitable small pet disinfectant.

Then, when all is dry, you can put in clean bedding (along with some of the saved older bedding and food stash) back into the clean hamster cage, trying to put things back in the same place that they were in before, and put your hammy back into its nice clean cage.

Finally, it can also be a good idea to have a regular day to clean your hamster cage so that this chore does not get forgotten – your hamster will thank you for it!

The range of hamster cages available can make the task of choosing a first hamster cage a difficult one.

We have looked at the options and suggest four of the most popular hamster cages, offering options between a more traditional wire mesh hamster cage and a plastic tube system, and one in between!

Wire Mesh Hamster Cage

The first cage we look at is a traditional wire cage, with an easy clean plastic base. There are two platforms, a wheel, two bowls and two tunnels.

There are flaps on the top and the side for access to your hamster.

The cage is 40 x 38 x 30 cm.

Buy This hamster cage

Combination Hamster Cage

The next cage we look at is slightly smaller at 37cm x 28cm x 35cm, but is expandable by adding other elements if your hamster family grows.

There are a number of levels with connecting tubes, easy side access and the water bottle, bowl and wheel are included as well.
BUY HAMSVILL 3 HAMSTER CAGE

Rotastak Starter Cage
The final cage in our starter suggestions is the Rotastak De Lux Starter Kit.

This cage has a living area and sleeping (attic) area, connected with a tube system, the wheel, water bottle and food bowl and can be expanded if you need to add extra elements from the Rotastak range.

The size of this cage is Height 26 x 48 x 28cm.

Whichever cage you decide on, we hope your hamster is happy and healthy in it.

Many of the decisions you will need to consider when choosing a dwarf hamster cage will be similar to the choices you have for any hamster, although some of the smaller cages may be suitable for your smaller hamster giving a wider selection to choose from.

Do ensure that any cage you select will properly contain your pet, as they are capable of squeezing though openings that can look far too small for any hamster to fit though. Because there is a lot of fur on a hamster it can be easy to forget that the body of a dwarf hamster is very small

Selecting a dwarf hamster cage should be easy and fun if you remember this and follow some simple guidelines.

1. Decide if you want a wire mesh dwarf hamster cage or a plastic tube style. A Rotastak hamster cage is ideally suited to smaller rodents.

2. Remember that wire mesh cages can be easier and quicker to clean, but may not look so appealing.

3. There are combination cages that have wire mesh bodies but also connect into the Rotastak system.

4. Ensure that there is enough room for your pet to play and exercise in your chosen cage as well as room for extra hamster toys for them to play on and chew.

5. Select a dwarf hamster cage that is right for both your hamster and the space and budget yow have available.
